- The Hikeshi worked hard, extinguished the fire with buckets of water and wet blankets, and tried to save as many houses and people as possible. Hurricane force winds made their work even harder, blew soot and black smoke into their eyes and lungs.
- After three days, the fire died. A thousand lives were lost, but many more saved.
