This is a template for any of the minor nations in Southeast Asia. Such as Khmer, Dai Viet and Champa.

Initial moves

For all minor nations the early game goals are the same. Avoid wars on someone else's terms, fortify any unfortified provinces and then work on Government technology 4 until the first National Idea is available, afterwards target Trade technology 7 for Quest for the New World. From here there are two requirements, prepare for Westernisation and secure local hegemony. At all times avoid inviting trouble from Ming their vast forces are too much for the minor nations to contend with while flying separate flags.

Local expansion

Select the Unam Sanctam national idea and work on any local targets using Holy War. As Westernising is a goal it is wisest to make these heathens Vassals or release them after annexation so they can be reacquired later. Picking up the valuable Centre of Trade in Malacca is useful as it will slowly generate colonists. If sliders are conducive to trading then this can be used to bankroll the next stage of the strategy.

Westernising

Use the colonists from Malacca along with Quest for the new World to go find Europeans, and then follow the How to Westernise guide. After this point it is possible to expand further in any Asian region or perhaps colonise the Americas.

For more detailed individual guides on this region see Ayutthaya and Malacca.
