Portugal has twenty unique missions which mostly deal with the colonization of the world.

Diplomatic missions

Portuguese English relations

Good relations with England have been at the heart of Portuguese policy since 1373[1]. It would be wise to strengthen these ties.

  • has a royal marriage with England.
  • has relations of at least 100 with England.
Failure conditions:
  • At least one of the following must be true:

Castilian relations

Our relationship with our neighbour Castile has always been important to us. We feel now is the time for fresh efforts to strengthen ties between ourselves and Castile.

The Spanish question

The formation of Spain has radically changed the balance of power in the Iberian peninsular. For Portugal to prosper we should ensure that we are good terms with our large neighbour.

Temporary effects:

Success conditions:

Trading missions

Monopolise trade

Our Merchants feel that too much of Portugal’s trading wealth is going overseas. They are asking for Government support to ensure that trade is monopolised by Portuguese merchants

Success conditions:
  • has a monopoly at a CoT located in the Portuguese region.
Failure conditions:
  • There is no CoT located in the Portuguese region.

Establish a foothold in the spice trade.

The Casa da Índia[2] had requested government help to establish a Portuguese presence in the Spice trade. This lucrative trade helps the Muslim rulers pay for the armies that threaten Christendom. It is our Christian duty to direct some of this trade to Portugal.

Acquisition conditions:
  • has discovered a center of trade in Indonesia and has no merchants placed there.
  • does not have at least 5 merchants placed at a CoT in Indonesia.
  • This mission was not the last mission.

Discover the Azores!

We have heard rumours of islands out in the West Atlantic that could serve as a base for future exploration opportunities. Let us send ships out to investigate this.
Type:

Acquisition conditions:
  • It’s at least 1425 A.D..
  • is not at war.
  • has at least 1 port.
  • does not have the national idea: Quest for the New World.
  • does not have discovered the Azores (367).
Acquisition chance: Temporary effects:
  • None

Success conditions:
  • has a ship in Sea of Azores (1567).
Failure conditions:
  • does not have a port.

Reward:
  • discovers the Azores (367).


Discover Madeira

A shipwrecked sailor brought back news of an archipelago in the seas to the south of Portugal. Let us send ships south to investigate this.
Type:
  • Country

Acquisition conditions:
  • It’s at least 1415 A.D..
  • is not at war.
  • has at least 1 port.
  • does not have the national idea: Quest for the New World.
  • does not have discovered Madeira (368).
Acquisition chance: Temporary effects:
  • None

Success conditions:
  • has a ship in Canarian Sea (1471) or Coast of Morocco (1472).
Failure conditions:
  • does not have a port.

Reward:
  • discovers Madeira (368).


We must venture further South

Our explorers believe that Africa extends but a short way further south and soon we will be able to swing round and find the Kingdom of Prester John[3]. Once we have secured an alliance with the Kingdom we will be able sweep the moors out of the holy land.

It appears that Africa is stretching further south than we first believed, if we are to go round Africa we must have bases for our ships to resupply from.

Conquer Ceuta

Our duty to Christendom is clear we must conquer Ceuta to defend Christendom for the infidel
Type:

Acquisition conditions:
  • It’s at least 1410 A.D..
  • is not a vassal.
  • is not a junior partner in a personal union.
  • does not own the province Ceuta (1751).
  • The owner of Ceuta (1751) is Muslim.
Acquisition chance: Temporary effects:

Success conditions:
  • owns Ceuta (1751).
Failure conditions:
  • At least one of the following must be true:
    • is a vassal.
    • is a junior partner in a personal union.
    • The owner of Ceuta (1751) is Christian.

Expand the buffer zone

Our base at Ceuta is proving useful in the defence of Christendom, but to ensure that it can be held we must expand the area we hold.

  • owns the province Ceuta (1751).
  • does not own the provinces Tangiers (334) and Toubkal (342).
  • The owners of Ceuta (1751) and Toubkal (342) are Muslim.

Comment: A Christian Portugal does not fullfil the acquisition conditions. During the update to Divine Wind 5.2, not all IDs were changed correctly between Ceuta (1751) and Tangiers (334) (former version see below).

We have discovered the rich lands of Brazil. The land has already been divided into Capitanias Hereditárias[4] and the Captains are asking for crown support to start up their efforts.

Although we can find no signs of the kingdom of Prester John[3], we can strike a blow at the Moors by wrestling the spice trade into our hands. We must find the Indies so we can do our bit to defend Christendom.

To fully exploit the trading opportunities in newly discovered India we would be wise to seize at least one port and hinterlands to serve as a base.

Discover the Spice Islands

We have heard tales that the Spice islands lie somewhere to the east. Already daring men are ready to voyage there, all they need is some support from the crown.

The Spice Islands are large and more prosperous than we dream possible. For Portugal to fulfil its destiny it must establish bases there.

  • does not own a province in the Indonesia.

Ever since the return of Marco Polo[6] we have heard of the wondrous wealth of Cathay[7]. We must establish exactly where this is.
