This article is accurate for the latest versions of EU3, Napoleon’s Ambition, In Nomine, Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind.

The religion of a province in Europa Universalis III represents the predominant belief of a majority of its population. Neither minority religions like Judaism and Sikhism nor pre-Reformation opposition to Catholicism such as the Hussites are modelled by the game. Religion affects many things such as local or national tax revenue, local revolt risk and even national military morale. Religion is controlled by the Domestic Religion interface, where the state religion is indicated by an icon.

Religious groups

There are four religion groups in EU3:

Religions of the same group consider each other to be heretics while religions of different groups consider each other to be heathens. Royal marriages are possible within religious groups, therefore this allows the diplomatic creation of a vassal and the subsequent annexation.

Christian

Muslim

Eastern

Pagan

In Nomine, Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind

Religious Tolerance

From In Nomine on, religious tolerance is instead divided into three categories:

  • State Religion (e.g. Catholic)
  • Heretics (Religions in the same group, e.g. Orthodox or Reformed).
  • Heathens (Religions outside of the same group, e.g. Sunni or Shinto).

Tolerance is affected by one's current religion, certain National ideas and decisions, legitimacy (for monarchies), and some particular forms of government. Tolerance is represented by a number ranging of -3 (very intolerant) to +3 (very tolerant), for both heretics and heathens. The more intolerant a country are towards these groups, the higher rebellion risk present in provinces of this religions. In addition, relations with any realms of that religion, will also suffer over time.

Religious Conversion

Province Conversion

Missionaries work slightly differently after In Nomine. Instead of the hit-or-miss method in NA, a missionary requires a yearly upkeep during the conversion process until the province is fully converted. The missionary upkeep is set via slider settings in the economic overview screen.

During the conversion process there is a 6% increase in provincial revolt risk.

Religious Zealots

Religious zealots, new after the IN expansion, may force-convert provinces if they are allowed to successfully siege them.

State Religion Conversion

Non-orthodox Christians can change denominations through decision once the Reformation begins. Other religions cannot directly change religion. However, one can surrender to religious rebels or be converted in a peace deal. This only allows conversion within one's current religious group (Christian, Muslim, Eastern or Pagan).

There are only a few ways to convert between religious groups:

  • A one-province state that goes bankrupt will adopt the religion (and primary culture) of its province.
  • An event with a very long MTTH (5000 months) offers pagan countries the chance to become Christian, provided that they neighbor a Christian country and have the "Western Influences" modifier (which applies when one has Westernized but not yet modernized one's military). There are parallel versions for Protestant, Catholic and Reformed neighbors, so having one neighbor of each religion will greatly increase the chance of being able to convert. These events are in file napoleonevents.txt (id = 6405, 6406, 6407).
  • In DW.png, various events and decisions can turn a Japanese daimyo's provinces Catholic. If a daimyo's territory becomes majority Catholic, a special decision allows conversion. Note that this only applies to daimyo; once Japan is united, this is no longer possible.
  • The emperor may enforce religious unity upon a member of the HRE, this allows such member to change religion to the emperor's one regardless of religious group. However, since provinces must be christian when they join the empire, this limits the usage of this strategy.
    • A strategy to put a state inside the HRE for non-christians without suffering major territorial losses is the enactment of decisions that move the capital inside the HRE, e.g. play as a non-christian state, let Burgundy gain Île de France and wait until they make it join the empire, then get it and the other provinces needed to form france, form it and you become a member of the HRE, then be sure to mantain high relations with the emperor and wait until they ask for your conversion.
