Climate
This article is accurate for the latest versions of EU3, Napoleon’s Ambition, In Nomine, Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind.
The climate of provinces in the game can have dramatic effect on economic and military aspects. The game as of IN incorporates four climate attributes that can be used to apply static modifiers to their provinces. The attributes are defined in file climate.txt and their effects are defined in static modifiers.txt. There is no way inside the game to change the climate of a province. The climate attributes are:
- Tropical
- Mild winter
- Normal winter
- Severe winter
The following map describes the distribution of these attributes on the game map:
Tropical | Mild winter | Normal winter | Severe winter |
---|
Tropical
Provinces with tropical climate are normally found around the equator, with the exception of South America, that has very few tropical provinces. Despite the name, this climate is meant to also cover desert-like climates. The effects are:
- Taxation and Census Taxes: -50% (removed in
)
- Production income: -50% (removed in
)
- Overseas tariffs: -50% (removed in
)
- Attrition of units in the province: +5
- Max attrition of units in the province: +5
- Colonist send cost: +20%
- Colonist success chance: -10%
- Colonial growth: -25%
The tropical climate attribute only takes effect if the capital of the owner of the province is not in a tropical province itself. That means that if your capital is in a tropical province, then the tropical effect for attrition doesn't affect your units in your own provinces. But if your units move to a foreign tropical province and the owner of that province has non-tropical capital, then your units will suffer tropical attrition!
Mild winter
Provinces with mild winter climate are normally found in moderate latitudes. The effects are:
- Attrition of units in the province: +2
- Max attrition of units in the province: +2
Normal winter
Provinces with normal winter climate are normally in higher latitudes, in continental regions. The effects are:
- Attrition of units in the province: +5
- Max attrition of units in the province: +5
Severe winter
Provinces with severe winter climate are found in high latitudes and around mountainous regions. The effects are:
- Attrition of units in the province: +10
- Max attrition of units in the province: +10
The modifiers for winter climates may only have effect during the winter months, and there is an element of luck on whether a province will suffer them each month. On the other hand, the tropical modifier is in effect round the year.
