Europa Universalis 3 Wiki

This article is accurate for the latest versions of EU3, Napoleon’s Ambition and In Nomine v3.2.
Please help update this page to include information on the HTTT and DW expansions.

Naval unit types are the four different naval units available in EU3. The base construction time is 365 days for Big ships and 180 days for all other ship types.

Big ships

Big ships are the strongest of all ships; a skilled player will use them to make up the bulk of his/her navy. They also are the most costly, and are quite slow compared to the Light ship or galley. Big ships have a base price of 50 ducats, a strategic speed of 6.0, and a construction time of 365 days.

Light ships

The little brother of the big ships has the same good naval tech multiplier as its sibling - but the hull size and the amount of cannons are not quite up to par. Thankfully, they are very fast, and are useful for speeding ahead of a retreating enemy and ping-ponging them for additional victories - much like cavalry. All light ships have a base price of 20 ducats, a strategic speed of 10.0 and a construction time of 180 days.

Galleys

This ship type starts off in the early game as the most cost-effective ship in inland seas, such as the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea, thanks to its Naval tech shock multiplier, but this advantage wears off fast, and by naval tech 11 ( )/19( ) the other ship types' multipliers are already significantly better. Galleys have a base price of 10 ducats, a strategic speed of 4.0 and a construction time of 180 days. Furthermore, all galleys get a +1 bonus to damage in inland seas, and a -2 penalty during naval battles on the high seas.

Transport

The basic naval ship type to move land forces over seas (colonists find their own method of getting across the ocean). In the early game, Cogs [1] are the main ship type used for transport. These ships can lift one regiment at a time, whether they are full strength or not. (If you have three regiments of only 300 men each you will still need 3 transports to carry them all at once.) Transport ships all have a base price of 10 ducats, a strategic speed of 6.0 and a construction time of 180 days.
